Three to four irrigations are necessary for obtaining a higher production of wheat, Agricultural Experts.

Adequate soil moisture is required for proper development of the wheat crop during every growth stage. Agricultural Experts said that timely irrigation of wheat crop is extremely important because if proper moisture is not available at early growth stages then the growth and development ceases. They said three to four irrigations are required for obtaining a better yield. Wheat crop needs first irrigation while developing roots. When the crop is timely cultivated this stage begins 20-25 days after sowing, so if the water is not given at this time, the roots are not properly develop and hence less tillers are produced. If sowing is done under less moisture condition then first irrigation can be done earlier and this will not have any adverse effects on yield.

They said that the period of second irrigation comes, when crop is nearly booting or heading stage. This time starts 80 to 90 days after sowing. If water is not given at this stage, the flowering and grain filling stage is highly affected. Due to which less grains are produced and hence production reduces. They further added that third irrigation should be done during milking stage or when the grains are completely filled. When water is not given at this stage grains are not properly developed. In case of hot weather fourth irrigation is done.
