Sunflower is an important cash crop. Its oil is very useful for human health and helps reduce the cholesterol level. The cultivation of sunflower can be successfully done with different crops in a cultivation plan. Due to the deep root system, it can tolerate water shortage to a great extent. It produces a yield of 35 to 40 tonnes per acre.
It can be cultivated in almost all type of soil except saline and sodic soils. For the preparation of land, ploughing should be done, so that the plant roots can penetrate deeply in to the soil. After ploughing cultivator should be used and planking should be done. Land should be properly prepared and it should have a good drainage system. Sunflower should be cultivated at a distance of 2.15-2.5 ft. through cotton drill or sunflower planter. It can be also cultivated in rows.
