The cultivation of spring maize should be stared from 15th January and special attention should be given to the land selection and land preparation. In order to obtain a bumper crop, it is important to choose fertile loamy soil which is capable of absorbing water well. Moreover, maize crop grow well on a land where previously alfalfa or potato was grown. In addition to saline, sodic and water-logged soils, a soil having pH above 8 is not suitable for cultivation.
The land on which maize is to be grown should not be surrounded by trees as maize crop cannot be grown successfully in the shade of trees. The land should also be well prepared, if maize is to be cultivated in previously grown potato fields, then two or three plows followed by land leveling would be enough for preparing well pulverized soil and if to be cultivated in previously grown field of cotton, sugarcane or sunflower, then firstly rotavator should be used to remove crop residue, and then thrice ploughing should be done.
