Pakistan is currently facing a severe shortage of edible oil while billions of rupees are being spent annually on its import, because of which the cultivation of sunflower is being promoted in the plains of the country in general and in the districts of South Punjab in particular. Encouraging results of intercropping of sunflower with BT cotton or sugarcane are also emerging. With this measure, valuable foreign exchange can be saved by getting the best production of sunflower. For the intercropping of sunflower, deep ploughing must be performed and a balanced application of fertilizer is necessary during soil preparation. Farmers must first grow the sunflower when it germinates and then start cultivating BT cotton.
